The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a groundbreaking government initiative designed to help Canadians protect and improve their oral health for life. By making dentistry more affordable for millions of Canadians who face financial barriers to accessing smile-saving dental services, the CDCP cannot only help protect and maintain oral health but also have a positive, far-reaching impact on the overall well-being of Canadians since lacking oral health can lead to a range of systemic problems.

Here are some frequently asked questions we’ve received about the CDCP since it began rolling out in the spring of 2024:

  1. Which services are covered? Routine check-ups, cleanings, fillings, dental sealants, root canal therapy, extractions, dentures, and more fall under the CDCP coverage umbrella.
  2. Who is eligible? There are four criteria for enrollment: Patients must be Canadian citizens, they must not have dental insurance, have an adjusted net income of less than $90,000, and they must have filed their taxes in the previous year.
  3. Who can currently receive care? Seniors 65 and older, children 18 and under, and adults who have a valid disability tax credit certificate are currently eligible to receive dental services. In 2025, remaining eligible residents will also have access to the CDCP.
  4. Is the plan free? Though the plan covers established CDCP fees, it is a dental benefit administered by Health Canada, and patients may need to make co-payments of up to 60%, depending on their adjusted family net income. They may also need to pay costs not covered by the CDCP. As such, it’s important to understand the cost of any service you’ll receive before proceeding with treatment.
